Becoming a Horse Trader

I made some difficult decisions about our farm.

The sheep.. my beloved Finnsheep that I hunted for months on end to gather up into the perfect herd.. are gone.

Turns out, I'm a really crappy shepherd.

Nobody was neglected. They all had their hooves trimmed and their wool sheared and they had lots of food and scritches and shelter.

But I was having a really hard time doing the responsible things. Vaccines were stomach turning for me. Banding (castration by a rubberband) was also difficult.

And, since we are moving soon and I need to have various paddocks set up to keep rams from ewes and lambs from rams, I figured it was just too much.

We still needed someone to help mow down the pasture. And horse biscuits are some awesome compost, which will work great for our farm... and so, instead of feeding 8 mouths and trimming 32 hooves and shearing 8 sheep and etc, etc, I traded them all in for one Penny.

Meet Penny the Paint.

As you can see, we are all in love.

I miss our herd of sheep a lot. Our pasture is so much quieter now without them. But this was the right decision for us.

So here's to all of the trail riding adventures ahead. Penny, welcome to Gnomeland Farm.

Introducing our Orchard Patrol

About a month ago, my lovely husband asked me what I wanted for my birthday. "Goslings," I replied.

"How many?"

So now we are the proud stewards of 6 American Buff goslings.

They are very cute creatures- they follow me around the yard and chatter happily when I talk to them.

They have an important job- they will help keep our orchard mowed down as well as being our official slug eaters. They are excellent alarms, and will operate as 24/7 orchard patrol.

But for now, they are having a quiet, coddled goslinghood.

And aren't they the cutest during golden hour? So fuzzy.

I worry that this one has developed a taste for jeans, and will no longer function as a lawnmower.

This goose loves my tractor, but is warning me that the Aflac duck may complain about the lack of a roll-over bar.

First Lambs!

Our very first lambs were born on Gnomeland Farm!

A few months ago (er.. about 142 days ago..) our gorgeous ram from Dancing Waters Farm, found a weak spot in our new field fence. He was only out in the ewe pasture for 20 minutes, as I had just left the field minutes before looking outside and seeing that he had escaped.

Tina presented us this morning with two very cute ram lambs. Good job, Tina!

Tina is a little overwhelmed right now with nursing (it comes with the territory if you think you're human and you give birth to sheep..) so we're supplementing the lambs until she gets her bearings. She has been cleaning them and cuddling with them, so we know she's got it in her to be a good mum. Wish us luck!

Welcome! Let's make some sawdust!

Guess what? We're starting a farm! Well, I guess we already have a farm if you count the 7 sheep, the countless chickens and the donkeys. Okay. Perhaps that's just a petting zoo. I'm talking a Farm. The kind that grows all sorts of goodies. The kind that produces food. Lots of it.

On 5 acres.

But wait, isn't 5 acres kinda small? That's basically a large garden, you might say.

Stay tuned, my new friends, for we are officially under construction. And it's going to be awesome.
